Red Wolf at Brookgreen Gardens

Red Wolf Ridge is now OPEN!

Fewer than 300 red wolves survive today, mostly in captivity. While these animals once roamed the southern and eastern United States from Texas to New England, by the early 1900s, hunters and farmers who considered them threats had virtually wiped out the population. Today, the red wolf is a federally protected endangered species.

Brookgreen's four-acre habitat houses four male red wolves in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Association of Zoos and Aquariums Red Wolf SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program.  The program manages the red wolf recovery program, overseeing breeding and population management to ensure long-term sustainable animal populations, release captive-bred red wolves into the wild, and manage their habitat.
