Have you marked your calendars yet? Brookgreen Gardens’ Fall Plant Sale is Saturday, September 23rd from 9:30am until 2:00pm. This wildly popular event is sure to have something for everyone!
For veteran shoppers, you know what a Brookgreen Gardens’ plant sale means: a plethora of neat and hard-to-find plants, top-notch horticulture knowledge from both our staff of horticulturists and local organizations, the opportunity to take home Brookgreen Grown plants, and of course, an overall great time! For those new to our sales, here’s how it works.
First, investigate your home garden and determine what you’d like to add to your landscape. Determine what conditions you have: is your garden mostly sun or shade, is your soil typically wet or dry, and so on. With this information in hand, keep an eye out for our plant list that comes out the Tuesday before the plant sale, which you can find here. Peruse the list and see what fits your wants and needs, and use that as your guide.
As I've said before, this event is quite popular, meaning the early birds catch the botanical worms, so to speak. So, whether you're a shopping ninja or just want to score the cream of the crop, mark my words: get here early to ensure you don't miss out on your favorite plant. Looking for further ways to prep? Over at Brookgreen we have a saying: BYOW - that's "Bring Your Own Wagon"! While we do provide wagons, it's on a first come first serve basis, and with how fast those wagons disappear, you'd think they were made of gold! But have no fear! If you do not get a wagon or have one of your own, crates are also available to use while you shop.
Once you’ve got your wagon (or have called in that favor from a friend who's indebted to your plant passion) - it's time to find your plants! We've meticulously organized the layout for easy navigation, with visible signage placed throughout the sale. These signs offer general directions, such as identifying plants suited for sun or shade. In addition, more comprehensive information is available through bench cards and informational sheets. Pro tip: take a photo of the bench cards for the plants you intend to buy so you have the information to look back on once you get home.
While you’re shopping, or perhaps after you’ve finished, don’t forget to visit our informational tables from local organizations. Clemson Extension’s Master Gardeners are a perennial (yes, pun absolutely intended) favorite that have regularly joined us at our sales to help answer your questions. Whether you want to talk plants or get to the root of a plant problem you’ve been dealing with, the Master Gardener table is not to be missed!
Once you’ve shopped to your heart’s content, talked the horticulture talk, and are ready to call it a day, it’s time to head over to check out. This two-step process is simple, but it’s always good to know where to go first. Before paying, head over to our volunteer ticket writers who will delicately sort through your plants to write you a ticket detailing the prices of your items. Once you’ve got your ticket in hand, head down to the cashiers to pay for your new green additions.
From time to time, we are asked if we can hold plants once they’ve been purchased; unfortunately, we cannot. Fortunately, your ticket to Brookgreen Gardens is good for seven days, so you can come and visit us in the days leading up to the sale, or the days following to get to enjoy the Gardens, without sweating it over if your plants are getting a little too hot in the car! Another tip? Purchase your admission ticket in advance to ensure fast entry to Brookgreen on the day of the sale! For our Brookgreen members, admission is included with your membership, so we encourage you to come and visit us often!
Now that you’ve gotten all the dirt, make sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, September 23rd, 9:30am until 2:00pm for Brookgreen Gardens’ Fall Plant Sale. See you in the Gardens!
