The Theatre Department at Coastal Carolina University is excited to present at this year's Brookgreen Gardens Art Festival with an original one-act play entitled Whispered Away. The story follows an iPad kid who, after endless doomsday scrolling, becomes exhausted and falls asleep. As she dreams, she is transported into the Amazon rainforest, where the animals and spirits living in and around a great tree whisper in her ear, warning that cutting it down will destroy their home.

Inspired by Lynne Cherry’s The Great Kapok Tree, this production blends mask work, folklore, and environmental themes into an immersive theatrical experience that explores the human connection to nature and direct communication with the natural world. Appropriate for ages K+.

About the Performers:

Actors from the Department of Theatre at Coastal Carolina University proudly present an original production written and developed by students Sarah Boles, Sanaa Chambers, Isaiah Cook, Ryanne Forrest, Walker Kemp, Lorien Lovell, Kassie Young, and Avery Avellino. In addition to performing, Walker Kemp has composed all original music for the production. This performance is part of Coastal Carolina University's ongoing commitment to outreach and to teaching young artists how to create and tour their work.

The production serves as a Capstone project for the BFA Physical Theatre program, highlighting the students' creativity, collaboration, and dedication to their craft. Funding for this project was made possible through a Student Travel Grant Award from Edwards College.
