Acanthus montanus is an herbaceous perennial that grows to about five feet tall when it is in flower. It is hardy in USDA Zones 7 - 10. It is best planted in full sun to part shade, but flowering may be hindered if it is planted in too much shade.

It is grown for its dark green, textured, spiny foliage, as well as its flowers. The flowers are borne on a noticeable spike.
