Join us for Brookgreen’s Gullah Geechee Junkanoo Festival, a vibrant celebration of West African, Caribbean, and Gullah Geechee heritage. This event, held on Saturday, September 14, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., will feature presentations, African drumming and dancing, children’s crafts, and delicious food tastings by Chef B.J. Dennis from Charleston, South Carolina. Enjoy live Afro-Brazilian Jazz by the all-female trio Sisters-In-Song and captivating Gullah storytelling by Veronica Gaillard. Come dressed in colorful, casual, or Afro-centric attire. 

Inspired by the Bahamian Junkanoo festival, our celebration highlights the rich cultural connections of the African Diaspora. Participate in mask decorating, craft activities, and explore exhibits such as “Gullah Geechee Gaardin,” “Seen, Heard, Esteemed,” “Lowcountry Trail,” and “From Chaos to Beloved Community.” Dance to the music, join the Junkanoo Mask Parade, and visit the Artisans Market for unique items. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste traditional Gullah and African-inspired dishes.

We are sorry, but this event has had to be canceled for 2024.

Bring your family heirlooms (furniture, quilts and textiles, china, silver, jewelry, coins), archival material (photographs, portraits, books, letters, ledgers, receipts, maps, charts), antique weapons, and historic and pre-historic artifacts, especially those that relate to the history of South Carolina.  We will photograph them, create an objects database, and provide an opportunity for you to lend them for a future exhibition.  Experts will be on hand to identify your objects.  For large items, bring good photographs from more than one angle.  Everything from kitchen implements to fine silver and furniture to farm tools will be welcome.  But, no human remains, grave goods, or looted artifacts.

Guests will enter the showcase of Barnyard Friends, as delightful characters come to life in a forest full of surprises, treats, and fun. The search for eggs and other seasonal goodies will feature a trip around the Enchanted Storybook Forest and Lowcountry Zoo. Children and their guardians will receive a map at the registration table leading them to areas where items for their spring baskets can be found. Families will enjoy meeting and taking photos with favorite Barnyard characters, such as a Duck, Fox, Frog other friendly animals, and of course a Rabbit! The sightings of live animals throughout the Lowcountry Zoo and playground structures in the Storybook Forest will be fun and exciting for all.

Please remember to bring a basket for each child as we’re sure every child is going to find lots of goodies! Don’t forget your cameras. 

 Limited reservations are available for this members-only event. Each child is $20 (ages 12 and under, please).

You only need to purchase tickets for the children you will be bringing. 

The Children's Discovery Room is located at the Wall Lowcountry Center. If offers interactive stations that engage ages  4- to 12-year-old children, along with their required adult chaperones. They reflect on the nature and history of Brookgreen Gardens. It is free with garden admission and children may stay at any Discovery Station for as long as their interest remains. At some stations, they will complete projects that they may take home with them. With ample written and pictorial instructions at each station, children will function independently or with minimal parental involvement. Hours are Noon - 4:30 pm daily (check daily schedule for exceptions).

The Nights of a Thousand Candles Preview Benefit for 2024 will support our exciting future initiatives.

Each ticket is $150.  A limited number of tickets will be sold, and your ticket price will include beverages (including wine or beer) and heavy hors d'oeuvres, which will be stationed throughout the Gardens. 

This romantic, exclusive evening will be on Friday, November 29, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Ticket sales will close on November 22, 2024, and will not be available for purchase after that date or upon arrival.

We are excited to offer non-member residents of Georgetown and Horry Counties a special invitation to celebrate Spring at Brookgreen Gardens with a Community Day!

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, adults, children and seniors will receive half-price admission upon presentation of ID with their qualifying address. *Tickets will only be good for April 7, 2018.

Guests can also apply their admission cost to a membership, which includes Annual Pass and other wonderful benefits like discounts pre-sales opportunities for ticketed events. 

On Community Day, our membership team will offer a special gift with a membership purchase.
