Natural History and Wildlife Art, Part II with Burton Moore, guest speaker

November 21*:

Resting in Peace: Residents of Brookgreen Cemeteries, Jennewein Gallery, Rainey Pavilion.

Did you ever wonder about who’s buried in the cemeteries on the Brookgreen Gardens’ property?  Also, other colonial, antebellum, and early 20th-century residents of Laurel Hill, Springfield, Brookgreen, and The Oaks have their final resting places in cemeteries throughout Georgetown County and abroad.  Robin Salmon will tell some of the stories connected with these people and places.

*Third Thursday

Brookgreen 101 is a public information program offered by Robin Salmon (VP of Art and Historical Collections and Curator of Sculpture), usually on the fourth Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm in the Daise Auditorium. The topics may cover various aspects of Brookgreen Gardens including the collections, property history, people, poetry, art history, corporate history, the founders, and Brookgreen purposes. Each program lasts approximately one hour. The advertised appearance of special guests and the program topics can be subject to change.

The student-driven multimedia publishing lab, The Athenaeum Press at Coastal Carolina University, has worked since 2012 to collect, organize, archive, preserve, and promote the local history that makes the coastal regions of the Carolinas special. Join Alli Crandell, Press Director, and Cali Duncan, Press project coordinator, to give a behind-the-scenes tour of the Press's adventures and misadventures documenting the amazing hidden stories that surround us. They will discuss the past ten years of projects, including three collaborations with Brookgreen Gardens, and new partnerships that are expanding the storytelling work of the Press across the state.

About the Speakers:

Alli Crandall serves as the Director of The Athenaeum Press, the Coastal's innovative multimedia publishing lab, where she works with students across the university to create regionally specific and professional-level publications. She also served as the interim director of The Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies from 2021-22. She is the primary facilitator of a wide range of digital infrastructure and media production projects for Edwards College. She currently serves as project manager for the National Park Service Civil Rights grant to rehabilitate the schoolhouse on Sandy Island and is co-principal investigator on the Gullah Geechee Digital Project, funded by the National Archives.

Cali Duncan is a South Carolina native and a proud Carolina girl.  She is passionate about many things, but has an associate degree in business, and believes that you should never stop learning. She loves her position at CCU because she can learn something new every day.  Cali is the projects assistant for Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts initiative The Athenaeum Press, as well as website editor for the Edwards College.  She enjoys making people laugh and being helpful to her fellow colleagues and students.  She likes to travel, try new foods, the Oxford comma, and visit with her family and friends.

Premiere of Seen, Heard, Esteemed

Where

Leonard Pavilion

Join us for the launch of a new public program at Brookgreen Gardens. We have been collecting living history narratives about Gullah Geechee community members of Sandy Island, Plantersville, and Murrells Inlet that will be dramatized and complemented with digital elements. On Saturday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth, presentations of “Seen, Heard, Esteemed: Living History Narratives of Georgetown County” will be shared to pay homage to freedom.

At both 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Leonard Pavilion, Ron Daise will present the following:

“The Sensibilities of Freedom” – an excerpt of the Brookgreen U lecture from June 18

“Lessons Learned about Freedom” – Remarks by Coastal Carolina University students and staff who conducted research for the “Seen, Heard, Esteemed” program

“The Importance of Freedom”/Introduction of the “Seen, Heard, Esteemed” program

Guests can visit the listening stations near the Lowcountry Center. The tour can also be found on the Brookgreen app, where all the narratives can be heard.

Produced in partnership with The Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and the Athenaeum Press at Coastal Carolina University, this exhibit has been partially funded by a generous grant from South Carolina Humanities, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and the National Archives.
