2022 Brookgreen Medal Lecture by Jeremiah Welsh

The Medal

Days of Silence (obverse) features a lazing American alligator viewed from below the water's surface with daylight fracturing and filtering into the surrounding water. The sculptor chose to position the view below the water’s surface in this design as part of his artistic passion to "look beneath the surface of things".

The Artist

Connecticut-born artist Jeremiah D. Welsh has pursued a mastery in and exploration of low relief sculpture for more than 23 years. Fifteen of those years were spent as a contractual relief sculptor for Matthews International Bronze, generating originals for architectural metal-casting applications. This position gave him the opportunity to engage dynamically diverse subject matter for governmental, nonprofit, and private clientele across the United States and around the world.

The Brookgreen Medal series is in its 50th year, having been established by Brookgreen Trustee and renowned sculptor Paul Jennewein in 1972. Each medal depicts one of three themes chosen by the sculptor: “The Sculptor at Work”, “History of South Carolina”, and “Flora and Fauna of the Southeast”.

Butterfly Field

Open Daily 10AM to 2PM

This seasonal exhibit features a lush garden filled with tropical plants where hundreds of butterflies soar through the air or perch on your shoulders.

Gulf Fritillary, Monarch, Zebra Longwing, Giant Swallowtail, Black Swallowtail, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, and American Lady are just a few of the species that call Whispering Wings home.  Colorful, dainty creatures, butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects. They are cold-blooded and depend on the sun to regulate their temperature. They are essential pollinators in the garden and need nectar plants for adult butterflies, host plants that provide food and camouflage for caterpillars, and plants that provide shelter from wind and predators.

Whispering Wings also contains a pupae emergence room where visitors may observe the transformation from chrysalis to adult butterflies!
