While some wildlife migrates to warmer areas for the winter, many stay put. In order to survive the winter, these animals must have certain resources available to make it through. Many animals, like amphibians, reptiles, and insects, need a safe place to keep warm. Many that stay, like birds, also need a reliable source of food. They typically find these resources in wild areas, which can be few and far between. But, why not in your backyard? Learn how to prepare your garden for wildlife this winter!

About the Speaker:

Kaela is a Brookgreen Gardens horticulturist that works primarily in the Lowcountry zoo. She has undergraduate degrees in marine science and biology and a graduate degree in teaching. Her background in conservation ecology and education fuels her passion for native plants and their interactions with wildlife.

Songbirds of the Grand Strand – with Diane DuLoft, of Wild Birds Unlimited

February is National Bird-feeding Month, and this year’s theme is “Winter Comforts

Birds need the same basic resources to survive that people do –   food, water and shelter.  Many of the songbirds in our area are residents all year, while others will migrate as the seasons change.

Bird feeders filled with high quality food will invite the birds to come to your outdoor refuge.  When the days are short and the nights are long, a diet high in calories help the birds to survive. We will discuss the types of food and feeders that will attract various birds, providing them with the nutrition that they need. Some of their behaviors and courting styles will also be touched on.

About the Speaker: Rebecca Cavalier is a wildlife biologist for SCDNR and is the Nuisance Alligator Coordinator for the upper coastal region of South Carolina. She assists in all things alligators, but her main responsibilities include nuisance alligator management and the continued development of alligator education and outreach.
